The Garganta do Céu Trail is one of the most incredible and challenging experiences in Rio de Janeiro, sought after by adventurers looking for breathtaking landscapes and a deep connection with nature.

Located in the Pedra da Gávea massif, within Tijuca National Park, this trail is an extension of the famous Pedra da Gávea Trail, but with a unique feature: an almost secret viewpoint, framed by a natural rock opening that perfectly frames the sky and scenery, creating one of the most coveted photos for hikers.

History and Fun Facts

  • The name Garganta do Céu (“Throat of the Sky”) comes from the rock fissure that, from the right angle, forms a natural frame for the sky and the city.

  • It is one of Rio’s most exclusive spots, accessible only to those who tackle a steep, technical path, requiring experience or a guide.

  • The viewpoint offers spectacular views of Pedra Bonita, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, Tijuca Forest, and even part of Christ the Redeemer on clear days.

  • For a long time, this trail was known only to experienced mountaineers, but recently it has become a bucket-list adventure for many thrill-seekers.

General Information

  • Difficulty: High – steep trail with technical sections requiring use of hands, climbing roots, and rocks.

  • Average Duration: 2.5–3 hours round trip, depending on pace and group conditions.

  • What to Bring: Minimum 2 liters of water, light snacks, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, lightweight clothing, and trail shoes or boots with good grip.

  • Recommended: Hike with a specialized guide, as the path to Garganta is unmarked and getting lost is possible.

  • Avoid: Rainy or foggy days – trail becomes slippery and the viewpoint loses visibility.

  • Altitude: Approximately 800 meters.

  • Starting Point: Estrada do Sorimã, Barra da Tijuca, or the Pedra da Gávea Trail entrance in Tijuca National Park.

How to Get There:

Access is through the same entrance as the Pedra da Gávea Trail in Barrinha, Barra da Tijuca, near Praça Professor Velho da Silva. Instead of continuing to Pedra da Gávea’s summit, a fork leads to the Garganta do Céu viewpoint.

What to Expect

  • Steep and demanding ascent with some scrambling sections.

  • Direct contact with nature, passing through dense Atlantic Forest stretches.

  • Incredible views from the top, perfectly framing Pedra da Gávea and the ocean.

  • Technical and slippery sections, requiring attention and ideally an experienced guide.

  • A great option for those seeking a slightly less challenging adventure than Pedra da Gávea but with equally stunning scenery.

Important Tips

✅ Bring water and snacks – there are no supply points along the trail.

✅ Wear lightweight clothes and trail shoes – some sections can be slippery.

✅ Avoid rainy days – trail can become dangerous.

✅ Start early – to avoid strong sun and ensure safer descent.

✅ Consider hiring a guide – especially if it’s your first time.

If you’re looking for a stunning view without climbing all the way to Pedra da Gávea’s summit, the Garganta do Céu Trail is the perfect choice! Ready for this adventure?
