Rio de Janeiro is known worldwide for its stunning landscapes, and among them is one of the city's greatest symbols: Sugarloaf Mountain . Located at the entrance to Guanabara Bay, this immense block of granite is an invitation to those seeking unforgettable panoramic views, history and contact with nature.

History of Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain is over 600 million years old and its rock formation is part of the so-called inselbergs — isolated mountains that stand out from the terrain.

The name “Sugarloaf Mountain” originated in colonial Brazil. The Portuguese used conical clay molds to make blocks of refined sugar. The shape of the mountain resembled these molds, hence the name that remains to this day.

Construction of the famous Sugarloaf Mountain cable car began in 1908 and was inaugurated in 1912. At the time, it was the third cable car in the world and the first in Brazil and South America — a milestone in national engineering.

Fun facts about Sugarloaf Mountain

  • The original cable car was used until 1972 and is now on display as a historical piece.

  • The tour to the top includes two stages: first to Morro da Urca (220m) and then to Sugarloaf Mountain (396m).

  • The place is very popular with climbers. There are more than 60 climbing routes that lead to the top.

  • Several films, soap operas and commercials have been filmed at Pão de Açúcar, including James Bond scenes in “Moonraker” (1979).

  • It is common to see monkeys and other wild animals during the tour.
