šŸ“ Telegraph Stone Trail

A viewpoint with breathtaking views and surprising stories

Pedra do TelĆ©grafo , located in the western part of Rio de Janeiro , in Barra de Guaratiba, is one of the most famous destinations among adventurers, hikers and lovers of creative photos. The place became famous on social media because of the famous ā€œdangerousā€ rock — which, in fact, is quite safe, but creates an impressive visual effect in photos!

🧭 General information:

  • šŸ“ Location: Guaratiba Hill – Pedra Branca State Park

  • 🄾 Trail: About 3.5 km (one way) , with a moderate climb

  • ā±ļø Climb time: 40 to 60 minutes , depending on the pace

  • šŸŽ’ Level: Easy to moderate (possible for beginners with basic fitness)

  • šŸ“ø Main attraction: the ā€œcliff photoā€ (spoiler: the rock is safe and has support underneath)

šŸ“– A little bit of history:

The name "Pedra do TelƩgrafo" comes from the period of the Second World War , when the Brazilian Army used the region as a strategic observation and communication point. An old military telegraph post operated there at the top of the hill, monitoring the movement on the coast of Rio.

Over time, the place was rediscovered by hikers and gained popularity on social media, becoming one of the most ā€œInstagrammableā€ tourist spots in the city.

🤩 Fun facts:

  • The famous "hanging photo" gives the illusion of a dangerous cliff, but the rock is very close to the ground! It's all a trick of the angle.

  • From above, you have a panoramic view of Rio's wild beaches : Grumari, Praia do Perigoso, Praia do Meio and Barra de Guaratiba .

  • Sunrise at Pedra do TelĆ©grafo is a magical experience. Many people start the trail at dawn to experience this moment.

  • On weekends, there is usually a line to take photos at the most famous rock — get there early!

āœ… Tips to make the most of it:

  • Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers

  • Bring water, a light snack, sunscreen and insect repellent.

  • Avoid climbing after heavy rain (the ground may be slippery)

  • It is preferable to go with a local guide , especially if you want to explore other viewpoints in the region.

Respect nature and take your trash back

What else to do in the region:

šŸ–ļø Wild Beaches

Explore the region's pristine beaches, accessible by trail or boat:

  • Dangerous Beach

  • Meio Beach

  • Hell's Beach

  • Deep Beach

  • Grumari (neighboring, accessible by car)

These beaches offer tranquility, crystal clear sea and stunning landscapes.

🄾 Trails and Ecotourism

In addition to the TelƩgrafo trail, the region has several trails with incredible views and direct contact with nature. The vegetation of the Atlantic Forest and the milder climate make hiking enjoyable. A local guide can take you to lesser-known viewpoints.

Tip: go in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunset overlooking the mangroves.

šŸŒ… Boat trip and mangroves

Some agencies and local guides offer boat trips through the mangroves of Restinga de Marambaia or to the wild beaches. A different and relaxing way to enjoy the region.

šŸ½ļø Where to eat after the trail

After your adventure, take the opportunity to try the seafood restaurants in Barra de Guaratiba. The region is known as the ā€œlittle Paraty of Rioā€, with great options by the sea:

  • Aunt Penha

  • Aunt Augusta's Lookout Restaurant

  • Aunt Joana's Corner

  • Bira de Guaratiba (incredible view!)

šŸ“Œ Extra tip:

Guaratiba is located in the western part of Rio de Janeiro and is best reached by car. Plan to spend the day or even an overnight stay in the area (there are simple and charming inns there).

✨ Connect with nature

Pedra do TelƩgrafo is much more than just a setting for incredible photos. It is an experience that combines history, lush nature, adventure and that special Rio atmosphere that only those who live there know.
