History of the Corcovado Train
The Corcovado Train is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of tourist transport in Brazil — and also one of the most charming! Its history begins in 1884 , when it was inaugurated by none other than Dom Pedro II , becoming the first electric train in Brazil and Latin America dedicated to transporting passengers.
The train was originally built to take visitors to the top of Corcovado Mountain, long before Christ the Redeemer statue itself was inaugurated (in 1931). Before that, the tours were to enjoy the view of the city and contact with nature in the Tijuca Forest.
The train was also essential for transporting the materials used in the construction of Christ the Redeemer. During the years of construction (between 1922 and 1931), the pieces that came from Europe were transported up the rail to the top of Corcovado.
