If there is one place in Rio de Janeiro that combines art, culture, history and lots of color, that place is the Escadaria Selarón . Located between the neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa, it has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city and a symbol of Rio's creativity.
History of the Selarón Steps
The staircase began as a personal project by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón , who moved to Rio in the 1990s. Initially, he simply wanted to renovate the steps in front of his house, which were in disrepair. With limited resources, he began covering the steps with colorful tiles.
What began as a simple renovation has become a true work of living art . Over the course of more than 20 years, Selarón covered the 215 steps with more than 2,000 tiles from over 60 different countries , donated by visitors and admirers.
Selarón used to say that this was an “ unfinished work ”, as he was always changing and adding new pieces. Red became the predominant color, which he called his “obsession”.

Curiosities of the Selarón Steps
Jorge Selarón was a self-taught painter, and he used his own image—a pregnant woman—in several of the works on the staircase. To this day, no one knows exactly who it represents.
The staircase became internationally famous after appearing in music videos such as " Beautiful " by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams , as well as commercials, films and reports around the world.
Jorge Selarón passed away in 2013, but his work remains alive, cared for by the city government and admired by locals and tourists.
It was listed as a cultural heritage site of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
