The most famous and stunning crossing in Brazil
Considered one of the most beautiful trails in the country, the Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing is a true paradise for trekking lovers. Located in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO) , this trail connects the mountain cities of Petrópolis and Teresópolis, crossing stunning landscapes of the Atlantic Forest, rocky peaks, valleys and impressive viewpoints.

Start: Petropolis Gatehouse (Açú Castle)
End: Teresópolis Headquarters (Alto Neighborhood)
Maximum altitude: 2,263 meters (Pedra do Sino Peak)

Serra dos Órgãos National Park: entrance by appointment (2 months in advance) and payment of a fee.
🧭 Stages of the Crossing:
Day 1 – Petrópolis to Castelos do Açu: About 8 to 9 km of constant uphill climbing. This is the most physically demanding stretch, but it is a guaranteed reward: the sunset seen from Castelos do Açu is an unforgettable spectacle.
2nd Day – Açu to Pedra do Sino: The longest and most challenging day. The trail winds along the crest of the mountain range, with technical sections, climbing and stunning landscapes, such as the famous views of Dedo de Deus and Garrafão .
Day 3 – Pedra do Sino to Teresópolis: A more leisurely descent to the park headquarters. If you have time, climb to the top of Pedra do Sino to end the trail with a flourish — it is the highest point in Serra dos Órgãos.

🧐 Fun facts:
The crossing was officially opened in the 1980s, but had been used by mountaineers since the 1940s.
The name “Serra dos Órgãos” comes from the rock formations that resemble church organ pipes.
The Pico do Dedo de Deus , visible along the way, is one of the symbols of Brazilian mountaineering.
✅ Essential tips:
Book in advance on the ICMBio website (it is mandatory and there is a limited number of places).
Bring suitable camping equipment.
Bring warm clothing , even in summer (temperatures can drop below 5°C).
Hiring a specialized guide is highly recommended, especially for those who have never made the crossing.
